About Jessica as a Therapist

Jessica understands beginning counseling can feel overwhelming. She has a disarming and warm nature which encourages safety and openness in the counseling room. She works creatively and collaboratively with clients, while offering insight and guidance to foster empowerment and positive change. She believes authenticity, trust, and some aptly timed humor are key components of an effective counseling experience. Jessica specializes in working in areas of complex trauma, identity development, and interpersonal relationships.

Training and Background

Jessica Van der Merwe holds a Master of Arts in Counseling from Western Seminary in Portland, OR. She obtained a B.A. in Psychology from San Jose State University. She is a Certified Brainspotting Therapist, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and trained in the Gottman Method for couples therapy. Jessica has experience providing trauma-informed counseling for adults in a community health care setting, as well as experience in counseling adolescents, crisis counseling, secondary educational guidance counseling, youth leadership and mentoring. She has experience working cross-culturally, including English as a second language.
