The first counseling session is the intake. The counselor will work with you to gather information about your current life circumstances, history, and problems and concerns; review any symptoms that are affecting your well-being and life functioning to help determine if you meet criteria for a mental health diagnosis; and create the treatment plan that includes the goals you want to address, frequency of appointments, and the estimated length of time to reach your goal.
Counseling / Therapy Sessions
Counseling sessions are for you and the counselor to determine what is most important to address and the plan for how you want to address it. Counseling can be used to recognize problems, learn new skills, develop supports and resources, explore your motivations and values, speak with openness and without judgement, practice healthy behaviors, and find hope.
Completing counseling happens when you and the counselor agree that you have met your goals. Whether you address all or some of the problems in your life, you will hopefully notice benefit and satisfaction.
